Commissioning custom jewellery from another country involves more decisions than choosing a design from a photograph. The buyer and jeweller need to agree on what will be made, which materials will be used, how the finished piece will be approved and which shipping or import responsibilities apply. These questions are especially important when enquiring from the United States or United Kingdom.

Start with a detailed design brief

Provide the type of jewellery you want, inspiration images, preferred materials, stone options, size and the intended occasion. If you are considering an iced-out watch, explain whether you want a particular style, an authentic base watch or an independently produced custom design, and ask for written confirmation. A clear brief reduces misunderstandings later in the process.

Check the material specification

Different metals, coatings and gemstones have different properties and maintenance needs. A description such as “gold finish” does not mean the same thing as solid gold. Moissanite is not diamond, while laboratory-grown diamonds are diamonds produced in controlled conditions. Ask what exactly the quote covers, including stone identity, metal composition, finishing and setting details. Compare options in our stone guide.

Agree on dimensions and fit

For a chain or bracelet, verify finished length and width. For a ring, use the requested sizing system and confirm whether resizing would be possible after stones are set. For a watch, provide your wrist size and ask about bracelet adjustments. Measurements in millimetres help avoid confusion between US and UK conventions.

Production approvals and timing

Ask when specifications become final and whether approval sketches, models or progress images will be available. Made-to-order work can involve different steps from ready-to-ship stock. Any lead time should be confirmed for the particular commission rather than assumed from another listing.

Shipping to the United States or another destination

Before ordering internationally, confirm the destination address, carrier, tracking, insurance arrangements, customs documentation and who is responsible for import charges. Duties, taxes, restrictions and carrier processes vary by country and can change. Do not assume that a product quote automatically includes import taxes or that every custom item has the same return rights.

Returns, repairs and aftercare

Ask for the written policies relevant to your particular order, especially where an item is custom-made or personalised. Clarify what happens if the finished dimensions differ from the approved brief, if a stone loosens or if a watch requires servicing. Keep a copy of the final confirmed specifications and transaction records.
